On Friday, the United Nations hailed the progress made since 2014 in Tunisia in terms of transitional justice, underlining the importance of “enabling the transitional justice process to achieve its objectives."
"The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tunis, Diego Zorilla, congratulates all Tunisians on the progress made with regard to the transitional justice process since the enactment of Law No. 53-2013 on Transitional Justice and its organization by the National Constituent Assembly on 24 December 2013.
Through this law, Tunisia has recognized transitional justice as an important link for democratic transition and for strengthening the rule of law. This path ensures recognition of the rights of victims and establishes the foundations for national reconciliation.
The United Nations accompanies Tunisia in activating the transitional justice process as required by international norms and standards. Since 2014, a program has been established to support the transitional justice process, accompanied by all the important stations that have been passed through this national effort.
Since 2014, Tunisia has made progress in the search and uncovering of the truth, especially through secret and public hearings, in putting in place reparation and rehabilitation measures for victims, in combating impunity and in identifying measures to ensure that human rights violations are not repeated.
The United Nations commends the progress made and stresses the importance of enabling the transitional justice process to achieve its objectives in a timely manner and under appropriate conditions. The United Nations is committed to continuing to work with Tunisia to support the implementation of recommendations emanating from the transitional justice process.
