Communications Intern

The Communications Intern will learn about ICTJ’s work advancing transitional justice and human rights around the world and contribute directly to the organization’s communications efforts. The intern will be an integral part of a dynamic communications team, and will build skills in research, writing, reporting, multimedia, design, and media outreach. Due to the global pandemic, the internship is remote, rather than based in our New York City office.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about promoting justice and human rights in diverse contexts and the power of communications to help accomplish this goal. The intern will have excellent writing and research skills, as well as a solid understanding of transitional justice concepts. Candidates with advanced Spanish or Arabic language skills will be given first preference. 

Duties may include the following:

• Monitoring global and regional news related to transitional justice; maintaining the website’s media coverage section; helping create ICTJ’s monthly World Report newsletter
• Research on transitional justice, which may include issues related to criminal justice, right to truth, reparations, gender, children’s rights, and institutional reform
• Drafting feature stories and other written products for ICTJ’s website
• Reporting on conferences, lectures, and other events hosted (or cohosted) by ICTJ
• Reviewing and updating ICTJ’s thematic and country webpages
• Monitoring and strengthening ICTJ’s online presence (engagement with website and social media, search engine optimization, etc.)
• Assisting with photography, audio and video recording, editing, livestreaming, and podcasts
• Assisting with press outreach and building lists of important influencers
• Design work using Adobe Creative Suite (depending on skill level)
• Posting on ICTJ’s social media channels as directed by manager

Interns are encouraged to attend all ICTJ public convenings, open meetings, and other human rights-related events to foster their understanding of current trends in transitional justice.

This is a part-time, unpaid internship. Due to the global pandemic, the internship is remote, rather than based in our New York City office. Students should check with their academic institution to see if they are eligible to receive academic credit for this internship.
