In a landmark ruling, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled against the State of Chile in the case of Vega González et al. vs. Chile. The ruling refers to 14 criminal proceedings concerning executions, forced disappearances, and crimes against humanity perpetrated during the Chilean dictatorship. The decision, a victory for the fight against impunity for repressive Pinochet authorities, will also serve as a regional and international example of reparations for victims of authoritarian regimes and punishment of perpetrators.
The ruling comes 34 years after the end of Pinochet’s civil-military dictatorship, which saw five people extrajudicially murdered and 44 disappeared during the years of repression and prosecution.
