Australian Military Officers to Be Stripped of Honours After Alleged War Crimes Under their Command

The Australian government will revoke military honors from their senior officers in response to allegations that the Australian special forces in Afghanistan committed war crimes. 

The step in command accountability comes four years after Maj Gen Paul Brereton presented yearslong investigation findings in 2020 implicating 25 current or former Australian special forces personnel in the alleged unlawful killing of 39 individuals and the cruel treatment of two others in Afghanistan.  

The action is part of a larger justice effort by the government, which includes a recent regulation establishing pathways to compensation for Afghan victims of alleged Australian war crimes.
