Head of ICTJ's Colombia Office, María Camila Moreno, Appointed Government Peace Negotiator

06/20/2024

BOGOTÁ, JUNE 20, 2024—In 2022, the Total Peace law was passed in Colombia, through which the government seeks to negotiate and reach agreements with armed organizations that still exist in the country.

On June 19, 2024, the current director of ICTJ Colombia, Maria Camila Moreno, was appointed to be a member of the negotiating team that will help develop the peace dialogue table with the armed group Segunda Marquetalia. View the appointment resolution here.

To assume the role of negotiator representing the Government of Colombia, Moreno will temporarily step down from her post as director of ICTJ's country office.

“We receive this news with a great sense of responsibility for the peace of the country and we understand it as a recognition of the role that María Camila and the ICTJ have played in previous peace processes and in the advancement of justice and the rights of victims. For this reason, we will reorganize our work and our country team so that María Camila can enjoy a leave of absence, temporarily separating herself from the leadership of the ICTJ in Colombia, and dedicate herself fully to this very important task," says Fernando Travesí, ICTJ's executive director, from New York.

A leadership team will be established to manage the Colombia office, which will be directly supervised by Anna Myriam Roccatello, ICTJ's deputy executive director and director of programs. This new leadership arrangement will be reviewed or extended depending on the development of the peace negotiations.

“The appointment of Maria Camila Moreno as peace negotiator, far from being a loss for ICTJ, is a gain that strengthens us as an international organization that is an expert on issues of transitional justice and peace,” says Anna Myriam Roccatello, who will be more directly involved in Colombia during this period.

Achieving sustainable and lasting peace in Colombia based on justice and recognition of the rights of victims is ICTJ's main objective in Colombia and, therefore, is aligned with efforts aimed at total peace. It is a source of great pride for the organization that María Camila Moreno will contribute directly to these efforts with her extensive experience, knowledge, and track record in the fields of peacebuilding and transitional justice.
